Welcome to “Richard the Rider”, which used to be called “Richard the Runner”. This is my blog about running and cycling, mainly virtual cycling.
I hate running.
I have all the gear, but no idea. I’m in my 60s, male, called Richard (obv!) and I’ve been advised by my consultant not to run but to swim and cycle instead as one of my knees has a fair degree of necrosis.
But my bucket list had “run a marathon” on it and I’d so far managed to enter the Berlin Marathon twice, only to pull out due to injury {sigh} in 2013 and 2014 after my then girlfriend managed a PB around 3:45 (which gave her a “good for age” entry into the London Marathon).
So in 2015 I had an automatic entry into the 2015 Berlin Marathon and this is my blog to record my experiences.
I managed to complete it, despite insufficient training (again due to illness/injury/laziness) and then thought “now what?” I could stop running altogether, but it’s the only thing that allows me to eat, drink and be merry without being massively overweight and unhealthy plus I’ve bought all the gear, so giving up would be a waste of money.
I was then involved in a motorcycle crash thanks to a careless young driver and that left me with “life-changing injuries”. The injuries and the crash are detailed on another blog of mine (along with the crash video from the pub where it happened). Those injuries and the necrosis in at least one knee now, mean that running – and indeed walking – can be very painful, so I tend to run less and cycle more; on the road when we’re out in Fuerteventura where it’s much safer for cyclists than the UK, and ‘virtual’ cycling in the UK.
So I’ve decided to keep on with my exercise most days from now on. Besides, how else can I become sexier than George Clooney?
Did I mention I hate running?
